26 – 28 January 2010 – Mr. Sergey Razov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the People’s Republic of China visited the Hong Kong SAR. During his visit to Hong Kong Mr. Razov met with Mr. John Tsang Chun-wah Financial Secretary and the officials of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

27 January 2010 - United Co. Rusal Ltd. became the first Russian company to trade its shares in Hong Kong.

16 December 2009 – Russian Consulate General in the Hong Kong SAR hosted a New Year and Christmas Reception for Russian compatriots residing in Hong Kong and Macao. In his welcoming address Mr. Sergey Gritsay, Consul General of the Russian Federation in the Hong Kong SAR, pointed out that the Russian community in Hong Kong and Macau becomes more united and is constantly growing due to the fact that more and more Russians come to work or do business in Hong Kong. Russia-Hong Kong bilateral relations are on the rise, the Consul General said.

To thank some representatives of the Russian community for their significant contribution into the life of the Russian diaspora in Hong Kong and Macao, Mr. Sergey Gritsay handed in tokens of appreciation to Mrs. Nelly S. 14 November 2009, Macao – As a part of a global cultural project, which is being implemented by the Russkiy Mir Foundation, a Russian Centre was opened at the Inter-University Institute of Macao. Prof. Vyacheslav A. Nikonov, Executive Director of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, Prof. Ruben de Freitas Cabral, Rector of the Inter-University Institute of Macao, and Mr. Sergey N. Gritsay, Consul General of Russia in Hong Kong and Macao, addressed those present at the Centre’s inaugural ceremony.

The Russian Centre is located at the Campus of the Inter-University Institute of Macao (Rua de Londres 16, Macao).

7 November 2009 – The Russian Club in Hong Kong – an organisation that unites Russian compatriots residing in Hong Kong – marked its 10th Anniversary. On behalf of the Consul General of Russia Mr. Rychilo, Deputy Consul General, congratulated the leadership of the Russian Club as well as all compatriots living in Hong Kong and Macao on this impressive date and wished every success to the Club’s future activities.

1-4 November 2009 – A delegation headed by Mrs. Svetlana Orlova, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (Upper Chamber of the Parliament), visited the Hong Kong SAR on 1-4 November 2009. The visit came as a part of the delegation’s trip to the People’s Republic of China to participate in the 5th Cultural Week of Russian and Chinese Women as well as in the 3rd Forum of Russian and Chinese Women.

During her visit to Hong Kong Mrs. Orlova met with officials of the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR as well as representatives of some leading political parties.

22 and 24 October 2009 – The Hong Kong audience had a unique opportunity to enjoy two concerts of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under the guidance of Mr. Gennady Rozhdestvensky – an outstanding Russian conductor and musician.

Born on 4 May 1931 Maestro Rozhdestvensky is considered to be the most intellectual conductor of his generation. His repertoire has no boundaries; the list of premiers conducted by Maestro Rozhdestvensky is very grand indeed. Maestro Rozhdestvensky is an author of many books and publications on music and conducting as well as of a book of memoirs.

1 July 2009 – The Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Hong Kong SAR of the PRC on Mutual Exemption of Visa Requirements for Nationals of the Russian Federation and Permanent Residents of the Hong Kong SAR of the PRC, signed on 23 April 2009 in Beijing, came into force on 1 July 2009.

The Agreement provides for a mutual visa-free access to the nationals of the Russian Federation and permanent residents of the Hong Kong SAR (holders of the Hong Kong SAR passport) for a stay of up to 14 days in the area of the Hong Kong SAR and the territory of the Russian Federation respectively.

The visa-free travel arrangement greatly contributes to strengthening friendly ties, developing cooperation and increasing exchange in various spheres including tourism between Russia and Hong Kong.

In his welcoming address the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Hong Kong Mr. Sergey Gritsay stressed that the Russia – Hong Kong ties have strengthened significantly and that the bilateral cooperation is gaining pace. The signing of the Agreement between Russia and the Hong Kong SAR on Mutual Exemption of Visa Requirements for Nationals of the Russian Federation and Permanent Residents of the Hong Kong SAR which will enter into force on 1 July 2009 as well as visit to Moscow and Saint-Petersburg by the Hong Kong Financial Secretary Honourable John Tsang Chun-wah (31 May – 6 June 2009) have become the most recent examples of fruitful interaction between Russia and Hong Kong. Mr. Gritsay extended his gratitude to the Hong Kong SAR Government officially represented at the Reception by Honourable John Tsang Chun-wah, Financial Secretary, for its readiness to further develop cooperation with the Russian Federation.  

Hong Kong officials, representatives of the Mainland China governmental bodies, Hong Kong financial and business circles, Consular Corps, heads of the subsidiaries of the leading Russian companies present in Hong Kong were among the guests at the function.

6 June 2009 – The Russian Language Centre hosted the Day of the Russian Language on 6 June, which coincided with the 210th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Alexander Pushkin, one of the greatest Russian poets. Learners of the Russian language of different age groups and nationalities took part in various contests in Alexander Pushkin's poetry recital, the history and geography of Russia, its customs and traditions as well as in the Russian language quiz. The Day of the Russian Language in Hong Kong has become an important event within the Year of the Russian Language in China.

 

25 May 2009 – A modernised website has been officially launched by the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in the Hong Kong SAR. The latest consular and visa-related information can be found here. The Consulate General would like to express its gratitude for developing the website to “Kitairu Co. Ltd” and its director Mr. Igor Koposov. 

8 May 2009 – The Russian Consulate General in the Hong Kong SAR held a festive event on the occasion of the 64th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. In his address to the activists of the Russian Club in Hong Kong the Consul General Mr. Sergey Gritsay wholeheartedly congratulated all those present on the sacred and bright holiday – the Victory Day. The Soviet people’s victory in the Great Patriotic War, said Mr. Gritsay, marks the most important event in the history of Europe, in the life of Russia and the other states former republics of the Soviet Union and their greatest common spiritual heritage. The celebration of this significant date in Russia and abroad serves to establish historical truth and strengthen the unity of Russian citizens and compatriots in Russia and abroad.

23 April 2009 – Ambassador Sergey Razov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in the People’s Republic of China, and Mr. Simon Peh, Director of the Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, signed in Beijing an Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Hong Kong SAR of the PRC on Mutual Exemption of Visa Requirements for Nationals of the Russian Federation and Permanent Residents of the Hong Kong SAR of the PRC.

The Agreement provides for a mutual visa-free access to the nationals of the Russian Federation and permanent residents of the Hong Kong SAR for a stay of up to 14 days in the area of the Hong Kong SAR and the territory of the Russian Federation respectively.

The Agreement will enter into force upon expiration of thirty days from the date of completion by the contracting parties of their domestic procedures necessary for its entry into force. The exact date of its entry into force will be announced in due course.
 

29 March 2009 – The Hong Kong audience had yet another opportunity to enjoy a stunning performance by an internationally recognized Russian musician – pianist Mr. Evgeny Kissin. Since his sensational debut in 1984 when he was only twelve years old, Mr. Kissin has emerged as a fore-front and most sought after piano virtuoso, playing with all the leading orchestras and conductors and in recital in all of the world’s greatest halls. On 27 March Mr. Kissin was conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong.

26 March 2009, Macau – The Herzen State Pedagogical University of St. Petersburg and the Macau Inter-University Institute concluded an Agreement on Cooperation. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Ruber de Freitas Cabral, Rector of the Macau Inter-University Institute, while Mrs. Valentina Smorgunova, Dean of the Law Faculty, signed the Agreement on behalf of the Herzen State Pedagogical University of St. Petersburg. The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Alexander Romanov, Deputy Consul General.

17 March 2009 – The Russian Language Centre in Hong Kong supported by Anastassia’s Art House organized on the margins of the Russian language course at the Lingnan University a Russian Cultural Workshop “Lucky Spoons”. Under Ms. Irina Surikova’s guidance a group of students painted wooden spoons to give them a traditional Russian look.

11 March 2009 – Mr. Anton Getman, Producing Director of the Bolshoi Theatre, and Dr. Marina Leonova, the Director of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, paid a visit to Hong Kong to choose three students of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts to study for a semester at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, starting September 2009. The winners include: 23-years-old Yuan Shangjen (from Taiwan), 19-year-old Zhu Xiao-lin (from China) and 18-year-old Emily Pak Ho-yi (from Hong Kong).

The internship of the three students at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy is sponsored by the Russian “Basic Element” Holding.

8 March 2009 – The Hong Kong audience had a unique opportunity to enjoy the only performance by a renowned Russian cellist, pianist and conductor Mr. Alexander Rudin and the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong.

Mr. Alexander Rudin started his career at the Gnessins Secondary Special Music School and continued its development by graduating the Gnessins’ Music Academy as a pianist and later the Moscow Conservatoire as a conductor. Mr. Rudin is the laureate of the International Competition “Concertino Prague” (Grand Prix), International Bach Competition in Leipzig (First Prize), International Gaspar Cassado Competition in Florence and the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

6 March 2009 – “A Touch of Russian Art” Exhibition was open at the Gallery by the Harbour. Paintings of five contemporary Russian artists – Mr. Dmitry Lenkov, Mr. Vyacheslav Khabirov, Mr. Evgeny Zakharov, Mr. Yuri Novikov, Mr. Yuri Nikolaev – are presented at the exhibition. The exhibition will be on till 31 March.

1 March 2009 – On the last day of Maslenitsa – a traditional Russian festive week that symbolizes the end of winter and the beginning of spring – the Consulate General, the Russian Club and the Russian Language Centre co-organised a party for the Russian-speaking children living in Hong Kong and Macao. The participants exchanged their knowledge of Russian customs and traditions, sang some Maslentsa-related traditional short songs (chastushki) and of course enjoyed the traditional Russian pancakes (blini).

    19 January 2009 – Mr. Alexei Kudrin, Deputy Prime-Minister of the Russian Federation and Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation paid a one-day visit to Hong Kong. H.E. Mr. Alexei Kudrin met with the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Honourable Donald Tsang, the Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong SAR Mr. John Tsang Chun-wah, participated as a keynote speaker in the Asian Financial Forum co-organised by the Hong Kong SAR Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

    18 December 2008 – The Consulate General hosted an annual New Year and Christmas Reception for Russian compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao. Representatives of leading Hong Kong-based Russian companies, artistic circles, scholar community, media, etc. were invited.

    In his welcoming address Mr. Sergey Gritsay, Consul General, outlined major achievements of the Year 2008 as well as identified goals for the Year 2009. Cozy and warm atmosphere of the Butterfield’s Club, a memorable performance of well-known Russian songs by a Russian duet greatly contributed to success of the event.
